Dry or dehydrated skin? The difference is bigger than it seems

Skin feels tight, dull or flaky? Dryness and dehydration can look alike, but they are not the same thing.

Skin feels tight. Is that dry skin?

Not necessarily.

We often use dry and dehydrated skin as synonyms, but they describe two different things.

Dry skin is a skin type, one that as a rule lacks lipids, that is, fats.

Dehydration describes a condition of the skin in which it lacks water.

Which is why even oily skin can be dehydrated.

How do you recognise dry skin?

Dry skin often feels slightly rougher to the touch and can leave a feeling of tightness. That can be especially noticeable after cleansing the face.

We often also notice dry or flaking patches, less of a natural glow, and a need for richer textures.

Skin like that usually needs a combination of moisturising and lipid ingredients.

And what does dehydrated skin look like?

With dehydrated skin, fine dehydration lines can be more noticeable, the skin can look tired or dull, it loses its feeling of freshness during the day, and an uncomfortable tightness can appear after washing.

What is particularly interesting is that skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time.

So more sebum does not necessarily mean the skin has enough moisture.

Which ingredients should you look for?

To keep skin moisturised, cosmetics often use humectants, that is, ingredients that help hold on to water.

Among the best known are glycerin, hyaluronic acid and panthenol.

But the other half of the story matters too.

Skin needs a well-functioning protective barrier. That is why richer formulations also use emollients and lipid ingredients such as squalane, plant oils and butters.

The aim is not only to deliver moisture, but to create a pleasant balance.

What if skin is dry and dehydrated at once?

That is entirely possible.

In that case a very light moisturising serum on its own often does not give the feeling you are looking for.

It makes sense to combine moisturising ingredients with a richer final step that softens skin and helps it keep feeling comfortable.

That is exactly why the OSLEA formulation brings hyaluronic acid, glycerin and panthenol together with more nourishing ingredients such as squalane, shea butter and plant oil.

Listen to your skin

The best routine is not the one with the most products.

It is the one that leaves skin comfortable, soft and cared for, and that you can easily keep up every day.
